— M.S. Gerontology

Lori Carpenter, Geriatric care manager & founder

I came to geriatric care through a life that has always revolved around people. I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by great-aunts, grandparents, and a great-grandmother I saw regularly — a multigenerational world I didn't realize was rare until much later.

Living in the cloud forest of Costa Rica when my kids were young deepened that appreciation: the community there was so intergenerational that I formed genuine friendships with older adults for the first time, and came home understanding in a new way just how much is lost when generations don't mix.

A nudge from a close friend pointed me toward aging services, and everything clicked. I went on to earn a master's degree in gerontology at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and I haven't looked back.

What sets this practice apart

Too many older adults and their families struggle not because support doesn't exist, but because it's hard to find and even harder to navigate. I work with both older adults and their adult children to cut through that complexity with a strong foundation in emotional and social health as key determinants of physical and emotional wellbeing.

I’ve lived in Winston-Salem for most of my life and it truly has my heart. Over the decades, this city has shaped me in more ways than I can count, and I've had the privilege of knowing it through many different lenses.

As a student at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, I was immersed in the rich environment of an arts conservatory and came to deeply appreciate the creative spirit that runs through this city.

As a mother, I cheered on my children and got to know the schools, teachers, and families that make up the fabric of our neighborhoods.

As a piano instructor and performing musician, I found my way into living rooms and recital halls, connecting with families through the shared joy of music and raising money for deserving non-profits in our community.

On the tennis courts, I’ve built friendships that have lasted years...

and through my career in aging services, I've worked alongside the senior centers, care providers, and local organizations that serve our older adults.

From the small businesses that give our neighborhoods their character to the arts community that gives Winston-Salem its soul, I feel at home in all corners of this city — and that deep, personal knowledge of this community is something I bring to every family I serve.

Beyond the Work

Nature, music and people- a few things that matter to me most. But never in that order. People always win! A dear friend once said “Lori’s favorite animal is a human.” It made me laugh, and, she’s right!
